Meet Susanna, Founder and Designer
I founded Native Wilds in 2015, after the birth of my two children, born 13 months apart. I felt unprepared for the identity crisis that ensued; shifting from maiden to mother left me feeling unsupported and alone during the wild emotional, physical, and spiritual transformation of pregnancy, birth, and the fourth trimester. I created Native Wilds as a platform for real conversations surrounding motherhood and want to explore this rite of passage in a way that connects, heals and empowers us. I design products that enable new moms to take on the world, babe in tow and without losing themselves along the journey.
Inspiration for the Nest® came on a rainy afternoon where I was dangerously low on diapers as a new mom of two. I needed so much gear to get out of the house with a newborn and 13 month old felt super overwhelming let alone actually making it into the store without getting the three of us drenched. I knew I needed a product that could protect my newborn daughter from the rain, function as a cart cover for my son, and enable me to make it in the store without a heavy diaper bag. Hence, the idea for the now patented Nest® was born, a multi-use nursing scarf, car seat cover, and cart cover all in one with a handy, built-in pocket to keep track of essentials on-the-go. I'm so proud that the Nest® is part of 3% of products totally made in the U.S. with fabric sourced from sustainably grown Eucalyptus trees that is naturally temperature regulating, hypoallergenic, and UPF 50. I thought of everything I needed for my kids and am so excited that other moms love using it too.
How has motherhood looked different than you expected?
I thought parenthood would come easy and naturally to me. That I would just be so overcome with love and adoration for my little babes that the late nights and early mornings and exhaustion and endlessness of it all would be a lovely breeze. Call me naive, but I didn’t realize how much of it s a choice. A choice to wake up every day and bring my best self to them. To choose them again and again, to choose to bring my whole self. I guess the selflessness of it all was my biggest surprise. It’s deepened me and strengthened me in a way I could’ve never understood before. That's the magic of motherhood though, how transformative it is. These little tiny beings you bring into the world become your greatest teachers.
